And just like that its the end of another season!

Well how are you all? We can’t believe that another season is drawing to a close. And what a season its been! We opened again after a long closure on the 17th May and hit the ground running. Zero – 60mph in 3 seconds flat and we haven’t looked back. Pretty much full from then through to the end of October, and so many lovely returning guests – its been like having all of our friends to stay!

But what about Weymouth? It continues to be as beautiful as ever, the beach in the summer was pretty busy but everyone continued to maintain their own family spot with respect for social distancing. And for a while I think we forgot about Covid and pandemics. We continue to ensure our safety measures are in place and have adopted some as permanent now, including our delicious prepare and cook to order breakfast – buffets are a thing of the past! Our guest lounge has stayed closed to reduce the risk of spread of Covid, but we are hoping to be able to open it again next year, along with the addition of an honesty bar for those of you that would like a drink before going out for the evening or a night cap on your return. The afternoon teas are now well established, so along with the cheese boards can be added to your booking. More details can be found here.

The cruise ships have continued to be a presence in the bay, far less than before as some are now cruising round the UK but the P&O Aurora seems to have become a permanent fixture. It will certainly be odd when the day comes and they are no more here, but bring on normality!

 

 

 

 

 

 

In our quieter times we’ve visited a few local attractions that we would recommend when you’re next here. One being Tyneham Village near Lulworth. The village and 7,500 acres of surrounding lands were requisitioned just before Christmas 1943 by the then War Office for use as firing ranges for training troops. 225 people were displaced, the last person leaving a notice on the church door saying “Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free. We shall return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly.”    This measure was supposed to be temporary for the duration of  the war, but in 1948 the Army placed a compulsory purchase order on the land and it has remained in use for military training ever since. It has a special, if a little haunted feel and well worth a visit.

Our second gem was Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens. We went last year for the December illuminations but hadn’t been in the daylight. We loved it! It’s magical with the nursery rhyme sculptures and the view from the top of the hill over Chesil Beach is worth the climb. Add into that mix the Secret Garden at Little Bredy and Mapperton House and Gardens and you will have more than enough to keep you busy.

A quick mention of our silver award at The South West Tourism awards, which followed on from the Dorset awards – we were pretty chuffed with this one and so unexpected! The awards ceremony was yet again on Zoom at 11 in the morning – not too early for champagne though!

So what will the next year bring? The bookings are rolling in fast for next summer already. Our season will start on the 11th February with a Valentine special weekend – watch this space for further details. Before then we are aiming to refurb rooms 3 and 11 – builders and materials allowing of course. Taking some time out to have lay-ins and leisurely breakfasts and maybe a few days away. And of course enjoying the Christmas and New Year festivities with our family and friends. On that note I will bid you a farewell.
